Jurassic dark knight:

Venom-squirting scorpion:

These strange creatures were observed for the first time in the 1960s, but recent study shows venom-spitting scorpions are very much in control of their defensive skills, unlike original thoughts on the species.

Giant plume:

In southern Chile, the Calbuco volcano erupted violently, sending lava down its slopes and launching ash high into the atmosphere. Researchers are studying the eruption with the idea that certain substances in the ash might have a cooling effect on the planet.

At Kilauea volcano in Hawaii, boiling lava in in the Halema'uma'u crater for the first time in over three decades. While it is no direct threat to people or structures, the ensuing rock falls may be.

Poopy penguins:
Gentoo penguins use their dark guano to melt snow on the Antarctic Peninsula.

Researchers recorded and studied thousands of hours of video of Gentoo penguins in the Antarctica. During this study, patterns of melted snow appeared. Experts observed that the feces of the penguins actually allows for the nest-building of the birds to take place.
